Heroes to Hometown
On July 27, 2006, the National American Legion formally entered into a partnership with the Department of Defense to conduct a “Heroes” to Hometowns” program establishing a support network and resources to meet the needs of severely injured service personnel returning home.
In August 2006, American Legion National Headquarters mailed a complete, descriptive “When They Return Home” booklet to all of its more than 15,000 posts to describe program participation.
In August 2006, American Legion State Commander Roger H. Webster, adopted “Heroes to Hometowns” as his official program for the Department of Michigan.
He immediately established a headquarters account to receive donations from American Legion members and supporters. All donations are used solely for
Michigan veterans (current donation list attached).
Concurrently, the Commander appointed a state level “Heroes to Hometowns”
Task Force currently comprised of Chairman Ed Brown. Their responsibility is to follow-up on leads for this type of assistance supplied to Department Headquarters by the Department of Defense, individuals, and other agencies. To date, the Michigan Task Force has assisted three Michigan veterans through both Department and area Post resources.
